Hi I’m Ellie. I’m a lecturer in Media at Birmingham City University where I am course director for the Foundation year programme at Birmingham School of Media.

In early 2020 I completed my PhD and the focus of my research is stand-up comedy and contemporary feminisms. I have been the researcher in residence with the UK Women in Comedy Festival since 2014. My thesis ‘Reflections on UK comedy’s glass ceiling: stand-up comedy and contemporary feminisms’ included data from mixed methods research with comedians, comedy industry professionals and audiences for women-only comedy nights.

In 2017 I co-founded Mixed Bill a comedy and gender research network with Dr Kate Fox (stand-up poet) and Lisa Moore (University of Salford). Mixed Bill is an informal network that focuses on engaging the public, comedy industry professionals and performers with comedy research through events and workshops.
